Chandigarh was named for the Hindu goddess of power, Chandi. The capital of both Punjab and Haryana states, the city is not only relatively new but also remarkably spacious, clean, and well planned. In 1950, India’s then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru asked renowned architect Le Corbusier to create Chandigarh. With his modernist vision, Corbusier built broad straight roads and concrete blocks laid out in grids, with none of the typical old bazaars normally associated with India.
Visit the beautiful Leisure Valley that sprawls over 400 acres and comprises several theme gardens. Perhaps Chandigarh’s most famous sight is Nek Chand’s Rock Garden. Spread over 20 acres, the garden is an incredible collection of human, animal, and abstract figures made completely of stones and, urban and industrial waste. (broken bangles, wire, metal pieces etc.) Other interesting sights here are the Sukhna Lake (a sanctuary for migratory birds and a national protected wetland); the Capitol Complex that houses Corbusier’s architectural contributions; the Le Corbusier Centre; and the Doll Museum.
